Two SUPER Programs on Superheroes

Program 1

Arie Kaplan is coming to Columbus! 

Author of the award-winning book From Krakow to Krypton: Jews and Comic Books , writer, cartoonist, screenwriter and comedian, Arie pays homage to the Jewish comic book writers who inspired him and who led the way in the development of the Superhero. Arie has had a career writing for Mad Magazine, The Simpsons and developing Superman Stories, LEGO inspired books for young readers, Little Golden Books, video games and a variety of pop-culture projects. 

This program presented in cooperation with Jewish Bookfair.

Arie will speak at 7:00 pm in the JCC. October 21, 2018

Program 2

Create Your Own Superhero

Arie Kaplan presents a SPECIAL workshop for kids grades 4-8 on Sunday afternoon. Learn how comic book and video writers develop a superhero. Then use this information to create YOUR OWN SUPERHERO!  This is a unique opportunity to meet a comic developer and learn his methods. 

This is a FREE program thanks to the sponsorship of The Wasserstrom Family!

Join us as I. David Cohen presents his new book 1000 Years of Memories.

Newly published, this book recounts the life stories of 10 local individuals who

have reached the age of 100 or beyond. Each one is asked for their earliest memory

which triggers a flood of stories- happy and sad. Two of those interviewed are members

of the Jewish community. David will recall the interviews and tell us more about his experiences

with these centenarians.

Wounded Warriors—1918 and 2018

The nature of war injuries has changed dramatically over the past 100 years, but so has the quality of medical care.  Modern techniques now allow functional survival after injuries that were uniformly disabling or fatal 100 years ago. Of our 262 central Ohio WWI veterans, several sustained life changing injuries. Join us at The Historical Collection on July 1 for this special presentation.

For the fifth consecutive year, the CJHS will introduce Jewish middle schoolers to genealogy with the intention of stimulating their interest in where they came from and who they are!

During the Thanksgiving holiday season, seventh and eighth graders at: Congregation Beth Tikvah, Temple Beth Shalom, Temple Israel and Congregation Tifereth Israel had a special “homework” assignment. They were asked to talk to their relatives, especially the elders, about their families’ origins and stories. They came to religious school, with their parents, on December 3rd or 10th, depending on the school, to participate in Genealogy Super Sunday. During each session, CJHS facilitators encouraged the students to share family photos, keepsakes, documents, and other family memorabilia that they have collected.

When Women Wore Hats: Jewish Women’s Organizations in Columbus

Opened May 23! Celebrate Columbus Jewish women, the organizations they founded and the good that they have done.  When Women Wore Hats explores the many women’s organizations that have existed locally.

The exhibit will be on view at the Historical Collection until November 30, 2017. There will also be a few First Sunday discussions focused on Jewish Women’s Organizations and religious headcoverings.

Author and Editor of the Ohio Jewish Chronicle, Pam Spence will present her book Glad Rags: Inspiring Clothes and the Women Who Wear Them. Ms Spence is the founder of The Glad Rags Project which is a celebration of clothing and how one uses it to express ones’ self. Her interesting and entertaining style guarantee a spectacular event!

The First Sunday Program will feature a conversation with Dr. Robin Judd on Jewish Women’s Organizations. This conversation is in conjunction with our current exhibit When Women Wore Hats: Jewish Women’s Organizations in Columbus. Dr Judd will explore the different Jewish Women’s Organizations over the years while being surrounded by the hats that women wore as members of some of those organizations.

Join Rabbi Avi Goldstein for a conversation on different religious headcoverings in conjunction with our current exhibit: When Women Hats Jewish Women’s Organizations in Columbus.

Rabbi Goldstein’s talk is entitled “Haircoverings in Judaism: Seen Through the Prism of Law, Philosphy and Gender” will explore different headcoverings and their evolution including previously un-displayed headcoverings from our archives and Rabbi Goldstein’s collection.

The Columbus Jewish Historical Society is beginning its fourth year of motivating Jewish middle schoolers to start learning about their genealogy and family history.

During the Thanksgiving holiday season, Agudas Achim, Beth Tikvah, Beth Shalom, and Temple Israel seventh and eighth graders have an assignment to talk to their relatives, especially the elders, about their family’s origins and history. They will come to religious school, perhaps with their parents, on December 4 for Genealogy Super Sunday, during which CJHS facilitators will encourage them to share family photos, keepsakes, documents, and other family information.

The genealogy committee is seeking interested CJHS members to observe at a Genealogy Super Sunday session as a way of learning some of the activities the genealogy committee does and maybe even catch the genealogy fever!
