Mt. Calvary Cemetery

Dates Active

: 1874

Address

: Mt. Calvary Ave near W. Mound (518 Mt. Calvary Ave is Catholic Cemetery)

This is the 2nd burial ground for the Jewish population of Columbus. It was purchased in 1873-4 after the City of Columbus ruled that cemeteries could no longer be within the city limits. The former location near Livingston Ave, was sold and the plots removed to Mt. Calvary. The cemetery was used for about 20 years. When Temple Israel obtained space within nearby Greenlawn Cemetery, some of the bodies were moved again to the new location.

The 1913 Flood damaged and moved many of the gravestones. Some were re-erected  but may not be correctly located.

Notable among the gravestones is the oldest one, that of Lewis Shrier. He was one of three brothers who died during the cholera epidemic of 1852. They were the first Jews to die in Columbus.

Civil War veteran Moritz Schwartz is also buried here.

A listing of community members buried in the cemetery is available here. (link to IAJGS-Cols)
