 Newark History

In 1898 Philip Plaine opened a men’s clothing store, Plaine’s Clothing Store, in Newark.  It remained in operation until 1968.

Philip’s brother-in-law Samuel Rattenberg opened a clothing store that operated between 1911 and 1931 in Newark. He and his family moved their store to Utica after 1931.

Their sister, Rosa, married Samuel Rattenberg who had been a tailor in his native Germany. They opened Star Grocery Store in about 1903. A success, the store spun off 8 branch stores around central Ohio.

Levi Hirschberg, a German immigrant, opened The Great Western One Price Clothing House. Branches of this store were found around central Ohio. One of Levi’s children, Max, purchased the famous “Newark Mastodon” in 1926.

Harry Horwitz and Jacob Teitelbaum opened a scrap metal and junk business some time before ___. This led to an auto supply business which operated until Harry’s death in 192_.

Temple Ohev Israel was organized sometime in the 1920’s. The congregants met in homes and later in rented spaces. A new building was constructed in 1952. The congregation closed in spring, 2012. The remaining families joined Temple Beth Tikvah in Worthington.
