Stern’s Transfer & Storage was owned by Jacob Stern. Jacob had immigrated from Austria-Germany in about 1884 and was a furniture dealer. This property had been Kauffman’s storage facility prior to Jacob’s purchase. The facility as it was in the early 1920’s, is remembered in William Wasserstrom’s Oral History as having horses and wagons to haul freight. He noted that from his home in Will Alley directly behind the warehouse there was always strong odor of manure.
In about 1907-8, Jacob Stern permitted the congregants of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church to use the warehouse as a temporary meeting place while they searched for permanent space. For a time the church was known as “The Jacob Stern Baptist Church” Because of ill health, Jacob retired in 1933. It is not yet clear what happened to the warehouse after that time.
